Your car’s LED headlights may make like a drive-in theater
Engineers of a certain age may recall drive-in theaters where movies were projected on a big outdoor screen for viewing by people who sat in their cars. NXP engineers say future LED headlight systems may be able to put on their own small-scale version of the drive-in theater experience thanks to matrix driver electronics. The idea is to individually control each LED in the headlights to, say, spell out “Ford” or “BMW” on your garage wall when the car starts. There is an evaluation board available for the chip, but it can only be obtained by contacting NXP FAEs personally – they say they are limiting availability of the board because the area is so competitive. We are tempted to suggest they might also be limiting availability to keep pranksters from getting a head start making LED headlights spell out something more interesting than just banding words.
