Getting the low-down on wireless charging in vehicles
The wireless charging area has settled down to the point where equipment makers have pretty much decided to use the Qi charging standard. That opens the door for reference designs. In that regard, IDT showed its P9261-3C-CRB, a turnkey 15-W Qi-compliant wireless power transmitter triple-coil reference kit. The kit includes a three-coil WPC Tx type reference board and 15-W EPP receiver board dubbed the P9221-R-EVK. There’s a layout module that enables direct instantiation on to a system board. The design meets AEC-Q100, grade 2 standards and CISPR-25 EMI/EMC performance for use in automotive applications.
The P9221-R-EVK receiver reference design (the black rectangle/PCB sitting on the charging area in the accompanying image) is a turnkey 15-W device with several programmable parameters such as the output voltage, overcurrent limit threshold, and external temperature sensing. It also allows tuning the Foreign Object Detection (FOD) feature by varying values in a resistor divider.
