Automotive e-fuse controller reacts within 100 microseconds to faults

November 13, 2025 By Redding Traiger Leave a Comment

STMicroelectronics has introduced the VNF1248F automotive e-fuse MOSFET controller, the newest device in its STi2Fuse family. The controller provides rapid fault response, flexible configuration options, and low-power operation for use in vehicle power distribution and safety-critical systems.

The VNF1248F reacts to faults within 100 microseconds—faster than a traditional wire fuse—to help prevent fault propagation within vehicle electrical networks. It includes a capacitive charging mode for managing large capacitive loads with high inrush current and a Standby-ON mode that supplies up to 600 milliamperes while consuming less than 75 microamperes. This mode supports efficiency and extended operating time when vehicles are parked. An external logic-supply pin reduces power consumption by 0.4 watts in 48-volt systems, while a battery undervoltage shutdown compatible with the LV124 standard maintains system stability.

The controller supports safety integrity requirements under ISO 26262, incorporating built-in diagnostics, fault detection, fail-safe and limp-home modes, and self-test capability. A dedicated control pin allows direct hardware management of the external MOSFET gate if the microcontroller fails.

Designed for 12-, 24-, and 48-volt electrical systems, the VNF1248F can be used in zonal power-distribution architectures, ECU main switches, and as an active supply for always-on circuits. It includes an SPI interface for configuration through a host microcontroller, eliminating the need for separate external programming components. The device’s on-chip non-volatile memory stores default configurations to ensure predictable behavior in fault conditions.

An evaluation board (EV-VNF1248F) and software package (STSW-EV-VNF1248F) are available to assist with system integration and testing. The controller is available now in a 5 mm × 5 mm, 32-lead QFN package and is priced at $2.63 in quantities of 1,000 units.
