Code-free driver simplifies setup of RGB ambient lighting systems

November 2, 2025 By Redding Traiger Leave a Comment

Melexis has released the MLX80124, a configurable LIN LED driver designed for automotive ambient lighting applications. The device supports dynamic RGB lighting systems without requiring embedded code development.

The MLX80124 allows engineers to configure lighting behavior using a graphical user interface (GUI) instead of writing code. This approach helps streamline the setup of RGB ambient lighting functions and supports faster integration into vehicle systems.

Each high-voltage output driver in the MLX80124 includes adjustable current sources up to 60 mA, enabling flexible RGB configurations. Developed using BCD (Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS) technology, the component is housed in a compact SOIC-8 package and is pin-compatible with other Melexis devices, such as the MLX81124 and MLX81123.

The device incorporates diagnostic features including open and short detection, as well as supply monitoring. It supports temperature-compensated RGB color mixing that can be adjusted for different LED types using their optical data.

Operating across a temperature range from -40 °C to +125 °C, the MLX80124 meets AEC-Q100 qualification and complies with ISO 26262 up to ASIL B. The driver is intended for automotive-grade applications requiring configurable lighting control without the need for software programming.

The MLX80124 is currently available.
