What to do when the dc motor stalls

NXP motor driverThese development boards hold an MC33931 H-bridge power IC as you might find handling the brushless dc motor doing throttle control in a vehicle. In this little demo each of the boards is powering a 2-A motor and an onlooker in the accompanying photo is applying a mechanical brake to the one at left. The braking causes the motor to heat up and let the power IC go into fold back mode, traced out on the display beneath the image. When operating below 165 C, the device PWMs the motor. Above that temperature, the bridge goes into thermal foldback, cutting motor current from 6.5 to 4.2 A on average, all the while periodically hitting the motor with a current burst in an effort to break loose from whatever is impeding the motor rotation. A new version of the IC called the HB2000 and HB2001 is coming soon with current limits that are programmable.
