Interleaved PFC, HWLLC combo controller hits 96.5% efficiency, 3W/cc

The RRW11011, RRW30120, RRW40120 and RRW43110 from Renesas Electronics Corporation are GaN-based control and power devices for a Half-Wave LLC AC/DC platform designed to support 500W and higher power conversion in IoT, industrial and infrastructure systems. The platform supports output ranges from 5V to 48V for applications such as USB Extended Power Range charging, power tools, e-bikes, appliances, lighting and some medical devices, and in a 240W USB PD EPR adapter design it combines integrated PFC, AC/DC conversion and USB PD control with up to 96.5% peak efficiency and 3W/cc power density. The solution uses zero-standby power technology, interleaved PFC with phase-shift control and a half-bridge GaN gate driver to help reduce ripple, lower component count, shrink magnetics and support smaller thermal and board footprints in offline power designs.
