An electric motor in a wheel hub
Protean Electric showed the latest version of its hub motor technology. The unit puts out 100 hp and 735 lb-ft peak (72 hp and 516 lb-ft continuous at 400 V) and has a diameter of 16.5 in., allowing it to fit inside a wheel as found on pickup trucks. The company says this particular unit is built in China to keep cost down and contains two inverters. Visible on the back of the motor (lower images) are the connections for the liquid coolant necessary to keep heat under control. The motor weighs in at about 68 lb.
