What’s inside an electric motorcycle
The production version of this see-through electric motorcycle at the Brammo booth can do about 110 mph and will get about 100 miles on a charge, according to Brammo program manager Matt Nelson. Nelson actually owns one of these bikes and says he commutes to work on it daily. Called the Empulse, it incorporates a water-cooled electric motor, a six-speed gearbox, and a 3-kW high-speed charger. Brammo developed the bike but sold the product line to Polaris which now markets it. Brammo also developed the bike’s 42-kW-peak electric motor in cooperation with Parker Hannifin, and the lithium-ion battery pack. Both the motor and the battery pack are commercially available. Originally developed for racing, the battery pack has a 205 Wh/L energy density and sports active heating and passive cooling. It sits in an IP 66 enclosure ruggedized for mobile uses.
