TDK-Lambda Expands PFE Series of AC-DC Power Bricks

June 16, 2010 By admin Leave a Comment

SAN DIEGO, CA – TDK-Lambda has expanded its PFE series of AC-DC power bricks, a market first, with the introduction of the new PFE1000F modules. These unique power modules provide a convenient AC-DC pcb-mounted solution with an output power of up to 1008-watts for applications in industrial, robotic, COTS, datacom, RF broadcast, telecom, signage, and medical equipment.

Up to now, using bricks in an AC to DC conversion application required two modules. One module was needed to handle the AC input rectification and power factor correction (PFC), and a second for the DC-DC isolation and low voltage conversion. The PFE series combine these two functions into a single brick, thus eliminating module interconnects and saving 25% or more pc-board space.

The fully-regulated PFE1000F models are available in 12V, 28V, and 48V nominal outputs and can be adjusted ±20%. The PFE1000F series can operate with a baseplate temperature range from -40 up to +100°C. Line and load regulation is 0.4% max. and efficiency is in the range of 82 to 86% depending on output voltage. For lower power applications, the smaller PFE500F (up to 504W) is also available.

All PFE1000F models accept a wide AC input from 85V to 265V at 47-63Hz; have active power factor correction (PFC), an input to output isolation of 3kVAC, and an input to baseplate rating of 2.5kVAC with application circuitry. In addition, over-voltage, over-current and over-temperature protections are included.

The PFE1000F comes in a compact 3.94 x 0.53 x 6.3 inch package and can be conduction cooled with a cold-plate or forced air cooled with a heatsink. All PFE1000F models are delivered with TDK-Lambda’s two-year warranty, are safety-approved to UL60950-1, CSA60950-1 (cUL), and EN60950-1, and carry the CE mark.

The active current-share feature enables up to six (6) PFE1000F modules to be paralleled together to accommodate increased power requirements and/or redundancy. In addition, the positive logic remote On/Off control and Inverter-Operation-Good (IOG) functions provide greater flexibility in the start-up or shutdown sequencing and diagnostics of the power system. An auxiliary output of 10-14V at 20mA is included in the modules for powering external circuits.
