Top power electronics threads on EDAboard.com – October

Industrial grade robust inverter build – I have done a lot of research online about IGBTs, gate drivers, blown up many IR2110s, studied PCB layout considerations, OC/SC protection, current sensors and so on but none of my designs has ever lasted for long when loaded by an actual motor. The waveforms were perfect, but smoke was always imminent. I don’t know whether I was doing something very wrong or was just too damn unlucky. I don’t know if this is a very simple task I am making a lot of fuss over. Does everyone blow up their first few inverters or is this something that should be quite straightforward? Read more

How should I synchronize the frequency and voltage of the grid to my solar inverter – I want to make a solar inverter, but the problem I have is, I don’t know how to synchronized my inverters’ frequency and voltage to the grid. Is there any circuit configuration that will help me to do that? Read more

Electric spring design using inverter – I am designing an electric spring for mitigating power quality issues. I would like to know which is the most new and advanced control strategy (like PI controller) for controlling half bridge inverter. Read more

Strange gain and phase waveforms – I am trying to measure the stability of flyback converter. When I have inserted the frequency analyzer in the feedback loop using 20Ω and isolation transformer in series with the feedback connection and performed the measurements, I found quite strange waveforms. The gain does not drop to zero and the phase waveform looks unusual.
Does anyone know what is wrong? Here is the waveform. Read more

DC/DC boost converter with 95 percent efficiency – I am trying to build a boost converter with 95% efficiency. I have looked around for some solution but most of the them seem to be around 90% – 92% efficiency. I am thinking of using GaN MOSFETs to try to push the efficiency. up, I have not used these before and am not sure if they might help much. I have already considered things like the inductor (low series resistance) and a low ESR tantalum capacitor. I would like to do a 20V – 30V boost to 150V giving me 150W. If there is a regulator out there that can give me this efficiency, I would be very happy with that. I am now considering if I should just use an MCU to do the switching using a GaN on a boost circuit. Not sure if this would have any added benefit. Read more

High-power 24V – 48V pulse generator from 12V battery – I need to get 24V to 48 volt, 3A maximum from a 12V battery with a variable frequency. Any ideas? Read more

Triggering circuit scheme for a full-bridge thyristor converter –  I’m designing a thyristor based fully controlled AC-DC converter. I’ve got all the ratings and part numbers figured out. What I can’t decide is how to connect the triggering circuit to the main thyristors. I’m using four thyristors in a bridge configuration. I know how to apply this scheme to a single thyristor but there seem to be no resources detailing the scheme for a bridge configuration. I’m using an RC circuit to generate the trigger pulses. The circuit is fed from the same AC source that’s feeding the converter bridge. Could someone explain how to connect the triggering circuit to the thyristors ?  Read more

Ripple voltage blocker circuit for 24DC V, 100A – My voltage (24v,100A) circuit is producing a 5v ripple. I couldn’t reduce the ripple voltage. I I use this voltage,  my equipment will surely get damaged. How do I reduce the ripple voltage? Read more

Thyristor-based static VAR compensator – I’m trying to make the following project as prototype: a static VAR compensator (used for power factor correction, voltage stabilizer) that is static (switched on/off by thyristors) with a control unit a PIC18F4520. The articles on the internet about such topics are generally entitled as “Fuzzy Logic Control SVC”. There are precise types of fuzzy controllers, such as Mamdani or TSK, but I’m told that a fuzzy logic controller can be coded to any controller, and its design is done in programming. I want to design a PIC18F4520, coded in fuzzy logic, that maintains a flat voltage profile. The mains voltage would be 220V @ 60Hz but due to disturbances and voltage fluctuations and increased VARs, the voltage at most of residential places are about 195V to 200V. Read more

What high frequency rectifier diode characteristics needed for forward secondary rectifiers – I’m in the process of designing my first offline forward converter. Like the current rating, I am going under the assumption that the DC output will be maximum 10A but the current going from the secondary winding to the storage capacitor can be larger if I am not mistaken. In any case, the diodes have two or three current ratings: maximum average current and maximum non-repetitive peak surge current. And I would think there are also a maximum repetitive peak surge current.  My converter will run at 25kHz. Is 10A the value I should consider to be the limit or can this diode manage >10A at 25kHz? If so, what about 50kHz? Read more
