Supercapacitor packs get CE mark

September 9, 2018 By Aimee Kalnoskas Leave a Comment

XLM-62R1137A-R supercapacitorPower management company Eaton today announced that its XLM Supercapacitor product (XLM-62R1137A-R) completed the CE mark self-certification for meeting the European safety requirements. Eaton is the first manufacturer to complete the testing and certification process for a supercapacitor product. Additionally, the company completed the UL testing and certification process for the XLM product and will add the UL mark as a registered component.

“We are proud to have the CE mark on our XLM supercapacitor product for our customers in Europe,” said Jason Lee, Eaton’s global product manager for supercapacitors. “Both the CE mark and the UL certification are examples of our continued commitment to providing our customers with not only the most powerful and efficient product, but also the safest, most reliable supercapacitor products available on the market.”

CE marking is a certification mark that indicates conformity with the essential legislative health, safety, and environmental protection requirements defined by the so called Product Directives for products sold within the European Economic Area (EEA). The marking is also found on products sold outside the EEA that are manufactured in, or designed to be sold in, the EEA. The CE marking is the manufacturer’s declaration that the product meets the requirements of the applicable EC directives.

UL is a global safety consulting and certification company that certifies, validates, tests, verifies, inspects, audits, advises and educates. UL is one of several companies approved to perform safety testing by the U.S. federal agency Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA maintains a list of approved testing laboratories, which are known as Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories. Eaton completed testing to the UL810A standard. The requirements outlined in UL 810A cover electrochemical capacitors (electric double layer capacitors, supercapacitors or ultracapacitors) for use in equipment such as electronic products, uninterruptible power supplies, emergency lighting, engine starting, and power equipment among many other applications.

Utilizing electrochemical double layer capacitor (EDLC) construction combined with proprietary materials and processes allows Eaton to offer a wide variety of capacitor solutions tailored to applications for backup power and peak power charge/discharge. The Eaton XLM supercapacitor is a high-reliability, high-power, ultra-high capacitance energy storage device. It can be used as the sole energy storage solution or in combination with batteries to optimize cost, lifetime and run time. The XLM features a low ESR for high power density with environmentally friendly materials, as well as being lead-free and Reduction of Hazardous Substance Directive (RoHS) compliant for a green power solution. Eaton XLM supercapacitors are maintenance-free with lifetimes up to 20 years and can operate in temperatures from -40 °C to +85 °C. Having the right power backup can avoid costly downtime and maximize return on investment.
