Circuit boards designed for high power
Circuit board materials today can be optimized for high-power semiconductors. One family of materials in that category is the Curamik ceramic ADVANTAGE family from Rogers Corp. They offer thermal conductivities from 24 to 170 W/m-K. The boards can include features such as data matrix codes for traceability purposes, nickel and nickel-gold plating to boost the wettability of the substrate and protect against oxidation, step etching of two different copper levels to build cavities and steps to facilitate double-sided cooling and creation of smaller modules, controlled surface roughness to make possible advanced bonding and joining technologies, as well as solder stops to separate solder areas from wire bond and other functional areas, and laser-drilled holes for quick mounting of power packages.
