Fast charging from a flat transformer
Planar transformers basically use flat windings to form their coils, often on printed circuit board material, instead of copper wire. They can be more efficient than wire-wound versions and have little flux leakage, though they may have more parasitic capacitance than ordinary transformers. Standex Electronics showed several planar transformers including this 10-kW unit. Standex engineers say rapid charging stations for EVs are a potential application partly because of the good energy efficiency, but also because of the compact package.
