A fan that makes a splash
Spal Autotomotive had this display of its sealed brushless dc fan motors which are normally used in vehicular cooling scenarios where the fan motor must withstand repeated washdowns with a water hose. Spal made the point by running one of the fans half-submerged in a water tank. But Spal’s Brent Chuck, seen here holding a fan assembly, was quick to point out that the demo fan had been modified to handle the submersion — the viscosity of the water would normally force the fan motor to trip out. Spal personnel changed things around so the brushless dc fan motor ran from 12 V rather than from the usual 24 V so it wouldn’t burn out pushing against the tank water, and the normal protection elements were bypassed.
