The difference a high-temp MOSFET can make
Fairchild Semiconductor developed extended temperature mid-voltage MOSFETs which can operate at 175° C. The higher operating temperatures can boost power density by up to 85% and provide three times more reliability than MOSFETs rated to the 150° C industry standard. To make this idea more concrete, Fairchild powered one of its new devices and sat it next to a low-temperature equivalent. The high-temperature MOSFET was 30% smaller than a 150° C version operated at the same temperature, as was visible on thermograms.
