Because PCB size matters

Dialog Semiconductor debuted the inductor-less, 50W DA9313 switched capacitor DC-DC converters. The high-efficiency device can power more than 50W in less than 10 mm² of board area, allowing developers to extend battery life and reduce charging time in direct charging and 2S lithium-ion (Li-ion) systems such as notebook PCs, DSLR cameras and portable Bluetooth speakers.

“We basically used cascoded regulating which significantly lessened the height and size of the PCB and eliminates expensive inductors, ” says Patrick Fournier, Dialog Semiconductor’s Principal Applications Engineer.
